Vintage jersey used in the match against Athletico de Madrid in 1972 during the Cup Cup.

1972, 4 years after its accession to the elite, the SECB plays its first
final of the Coupe de France, and thus wins the right to participate in its first
European Cup. The summer break looks bright... not really.

Internally, the summer is very hectic. Differences on the transfer window lead to the
resignation of Victor Lorenzi, President of the club since 1933, and principal
architect of his emancipation.


This real earthquake could have jeopardized our club, then in search of stability in the first division despite limited means. But there are institutions that grow stronger in the difficulties they face.


After a delicate start to the championship, Sporting appeared on September 14, 1972, for its first big European night; against a giant, Atlético de Madrid.
The meeting, outrageously dominated by the blues, ends in a goalless draw of 0 to 0.

The European history of the François Coty stadium ends there. That of Sporting only does
begin.

It could already have been punctuated by a monumental feat, during the return match,
in the mythical lair of mattress makers, the Vicente Calderón stadium, Sporting thwarts the odds and opens the scoring through Fanfan Felix. It was not until the heart of the second period that the people of Madrid came to the end of a heroic Bastia.
